March 2009

Welcome to the first Changing Worlds Newsletter of 2009. I hope the year has been kind to you so far. It has been a very busy start to the year for us. You may have noticed a few changes on our website. We have added a couple of new gap year placements in Africa which I am very excited about. If football is your game then our Uganda placement will be perfect for you, or if you are a fan of the classic film Jaws then working abroad in South Africa will really appeal!

Social Media is an area we have been focusing on growing and we now feel we have all bases covered. Our Facebook group is a source of great information, photos and reviews from past volunteers. Our account on Twitter is proving to be a brilliant networking tool and enables us to quickly spread news, links and updates that we want to share with the world. Our new Blog lets us pass on updates and photos from volunteers as well as letting us post articles and news that we feel you need to know about. Placement Visits

India and Dubai have been my latest country visits while Shirley has been to Thailand. India was buzzing with Oscar fever as Slumdog Millionaire filled the locals with national pride. If you have any interest in India, whether you've volunteered there with us or if you are thinking about going there on your gap year or travels then it really is a must see film.

Shirley has put some photos up on Facebook from her Thai visit. Even if you do not have an account you can see them here.

Volunteer News

James Patterson is heading off to Ghana in April and he has been able to completely fund the trip himself by fundraising! He's raised £4000 through commitment and hard work, while also having a bit of fun along the way.

Changing Worlds Ambassadors

Our past volunteers provide the best source of information about our placements and the service we offer. For this reason we have set up the Changing Worlds Ambassador scheme where we are encouraging past volunteers to actively publicise our activities after they return. The idea is that they are active on our Facebook page, Twitter account and Blog to provide honest answers to any questions you may have.

If you are considering working abroad on your gap year but need specific questions answered about life away from home they will be there to tell you about their experiences. If you want fundraising advice they can help. If you can't decide which backpack to take they are the people to ask.

Our team of Ambassadors currently includes around a dozen past participants dotted around the country. Some are at university while some have gone into the work place but all of them have invaluable tips and advice. They also have fabulous stories and photos that they will never get bored of sharing.

We will run an Ambassador Profile section in future newsletters. If in the mean time you are interested in talking to a Changing Worlds Ambassador or you are interested in becoming one yourself please contact me on david@changingworlds.co.uk and I will send you some more information.
