Changing Worlds has teamed up with a leading newspaper in the Southern Indian city of Chennai (formerly known as Madras).

We send volunteers to work as part of a busy team in a modern newspaper office. In the past volunteers have found themselves writing and editing stories, researching background information, taking photographs and even making the tea!

This experience is for those people who have a genuine interest in working for a newspaper. You must be keen, able to turn your hand to all situations and ensure you can work to strict deadlines. Ideally you will have had some kind of work experience in the trade or have helped produce written materials (like a school newsletter) over a sustained time as this shows your commitment to the profession.

The newspaper is produced six days a week (excluding Sundays). Most volunteers initially contribute to the Saturday edition of their weekly magazine - this is usually based on an area of interest or expertise that the volunteer feels confident about. In the past volunteers have produced features on fashion, music, sport and education. Be prepared to be confronted for a request for an article on arrival - so take your laptop!

The working days vary but as a rule the day begins collecting stories for the newspaper - this means travelling around the city visiting scenes and interviewing people. After lunch you return to the office to write up the stories (under the guidance of the sub editor) and these are discussed and edited accordingly. At the end of the day the story goes to print to be sold the next day. By the end of the day a meeting of journalists discuss the strategy for the following morning and the whole process is repeated.

You live in an apartment shared with other interns and volunteers - some are local people whilst others have come from the UK and the USA. The accommodation is basic but adequate with access to toilet and shower.

You are given a daily allowance for food that will easily meet your requirements - this way you can eat at a time that suits you and with colleagues and friends.
