Most of the work will be in Friends soccer academy where you will be involved in the routine teaching of the students in the academy.
On top of that volunteers will also be working in a talent development program outreach wing for the local children, who are not in the academy. There they will organise soccer camps and other activities for the local children in the community. Because there is a tremendous need to raise leaders, volunteers will also run instructors courses to help raise local coaches.
There is also opportunities to teach music in the community music club. This would be of interest to people who enjoy playing musical instruments and do not wish to get bogged down with the formalities of music. A great chance to have some fun and pass on your skills. There is a keen enthusiasm within the community (particularly from the children) to learn more - if you can play the guitar, drums or keyboard then not only will you be bringing your experiences but you will have lots of fun too!
The soccer academy and the music club are attached to different schools where volunteers will be helping to teach sports and any other subject of interest like Basic English language in the local schools.
The volunteers will also help to organise sports tournaments (including basketball and boxing)and help structure the administrative areas of sports in the local area.
The volunteers will help in building a local football club which will participate in the Uganda national league. On a national level volunteers will be part of the national schools football competitions, through either coaching or being involved in administrative help.
We have made arrangements for volunteers to meet with the national football governing body (Uganda Football Association), to discuss how the volunteer work can be incorporated in the national calendar of Uganda football development.
In this multicultural community of Lugazi the only tool that brings people together in unity is sport, people have all sorts of misunderstandings, from tribal to territorial, the only universal language that brings people to peace is sport (particularly football). Sport is a tool that can be used to penetrate the different circles of the society.
Sports and music, once developed, can act as a source of entertainment and employment which will in turn can help to fight poverty in this country.
