You will have the option to do any of these challenging placements in Tukums.
If you enjoy playing with the little ones then the kindergarten placement will automatically appeal. You support the valuable work of hard working staff. You mainly teach simple English (practice those nursery rhymes before you depart!) but if you are happy to contribute in other subject areas then this will be encouraged. The children learn to the Waldorf methodology that encourages them to learn holistically and using the natural surroundings. The children are aged between 3 and 7 and go on to the state school system.
If you would like to work with older children and young adults then we can invite you to work at a youth centre. Not an easy placement this one but if you are up for a real challenge and you can give as good as you get then you will thrive and the children and the young adults will enjoy your company. They are from disadvantaged groups in Tukums. Some are from gypsy families. The main work takes place in the evenings as the children are at school but there is always plenty to do in preparation for your activities. You will be supported by the local staff who are looking for new ideas and ways to motivate and excite them.
Finally in the centre of Tukums is a small language school where children and adults learn foreign languages inlcuding spoken English. Volunteers would be welcomed by the staff who are looking for native English people who are happy to pop in and chat to their staff. No previous teaching required. The placement promises to be lots of fun. On Wednesdays you will take the 40 minute drive to a local orphanage where you can help teach the children there.
If all these placements appeal to you then thats fine. If its only one then thats fine too!
