Teaching

You will work alongside your local colleagues, primarily as a teacher of English language. T

he schools conform to a national curriculum that encourages the use of strict grammar rules. This can make it quite demanding for volunteers but as your confidence increases you will find that you quickly get used to working in this way.

If you are prepared to turn your hand to other subject areas this will be very well received. In the past volunteers have taught maths, geography and science depending on their areas of expertise.

The biggest impact you can make is not necessarily in the classroom. We encourage all volunteers to take an active

role in extra curricular activities – such as sport, drama, music and art. This is great fun and builds excellent relationships with the children in your care. Local teachers find it hard to make time to get involved in these activities.

Children’s homes

You will work as a carer in the children’s home that means you can expect to turn your hand to all aspects of life in the institution.

The hosts like to have volunteers because they feel it improves the general level of spoken English for the children. In some placements there is some formal teaching but generally it is teaching through play. Re-learn your nursery rhymes before you depart!

However in the past volunteers have found themselves fulfilling all kinds of duties from getting the children up every morning, to helping feed them to organising events through to helping the staff in the office. Each institution has its own unique method of deploying volunteers.

We need people who can be flexible.  In all cases you are working side by side with local colleagues. We are anxious that volunteers are not replacing local staff by rotating our support around different institutions.

Medical work

You will work directly with a leading doctor in the hospital. You would be directly responsble to this person.

You are expected to assist in areas that do not necessary require specialized skills in medical centres and hospitals. Most hospitals lack extensive equipment but work in the nursery wards would very rewarding for volunteers with the heart to assist in areas like the medical field. Ohter duties will vary depending on your previous experiences.
