Volunteers will work either in the day school or in the boarding school. In the boarding school, they are like a part of the family, helping with waking pupils up and putting them to bed, showers, meals, helping in the kitchen, and homework. They may be asked to take pupils to doctors appointments, act as a scribe for them in class, or assist them in sports lessons. They are also of course there with the pupils after school to play board games, table tennis, chat to the pupils, or take them into the city to go shopping, cinema visits and so forth.
In the day school, volunteers work in the pupils’ ‘homerooms’, where the children go before and after school, between classes, and for breaks. This involves playing with the pupils in their free-time, helping with their homework, helping in the kitchen, assisting with English classes, taking the pupils outside for sport, and helping the pupils during morning tea and lunch. Volunteers also go on class excursions to assist the teachers.
Volunteers will learn how to care for pupils with special needs. They will learn about the German culture, experience a new and different lifestyle, and gain independence. Volunteers will also have an incredible chance to improve their German, and to make new and life-long friendships.
