Germany has lots to offer in terms of free-time activities.
There is plenty to do in Heidelberg and the surrounding towns – visiting the castle, beautiful forest walks, restaurants and cafes, and the Heidelberg zoo are just a few of them.
Heidelberg boasts the longest shopping strip in Germany and you can also make day trips to the neighbouring cities of Mannheim, Frankfurt and Karlsruhe. Volunteers will always work with other young German colleagues (doing compulsory civil service, work experience, or a Gap Year) so it is very easy to make friends with the locals.
There are plenty of pubs and bars where you can go out at night in Heidelberg and being a University town there are always plenty of young people around.
On weekends volunteers can make further trips – to other German cities, or even other European countries. As Germany is centrally located in Europe, it is very easy to reach other countries.
Cheap flights are easy to find, and there are always opportunities to visit exciting places. On longer school holidays, the possibilities for travel are endless.
