All people working in the hospitality industry will work in bars, cafes or restuarants. This is physically demanding and requires a positive work attitude. You can expect to work shifts in the evening and at weekends and to have two days off a week. Standards are very high – you must be punctual, adhere to a strict dress code and be courteous to customers. We encourage participants to gain as much relevant work experience as they can before departing from the UK - we would say a minimum of six months part time experience is required by the Australian hospitality industry! We can send people with less experience but we cannot guarantee work in this industry - however in the past we have found good paid work in the retail (shops) sector! We have paid opportunities to work as a teaching assistant in a secondary school in Melbourne. The school is interested in having Changing Worlds participants to come and help in all aspects of education. Your main input will be helping in the outdoor education department. Here you will be getting involved in teaching the kids things like kayaking, mountaineering and general outdoor survival skills. There are opportunities to work as a teaching assistant in a primary/intermediate school in Shepparton 2 hours north of Melbourne in the sunny fruit growing area, The school needs help with the children who find learning difficult, either because of language problems or because of coming from a poorer socio-echonomic background. you can expect to teach the children all sorts of subjects. Outback volunteer placements provide a tough physical challenge for people who enjoy working outdoors for long hours. Applicants must be self sufficient, motivated and willing to get their hands dirty. A clean UK driving licence is useful. The ability to ride a horse is a huge advantage. There is no machinery work available. There is the opportunity to work as a tutor in the outback for those people who like working with kids. Voluntary placements in zoos will be of particular interest to those wishing to work with animals. The zoos contain koalas, birds, dingoes and crocodiles! Duties include feeding and watering, animal care and general maintenance.
